Romantic Sayn - Sayn Abbey

Sayn Abbey
Towards the end of the 12th century, Count Heinrich II. von Sayn and his son Heinrich III. founded the Abbey of the Premonstratensian order at the entrance to the Brex valley. The consecration took place in Mai 1202 in presence of many dignitaries, both secular and ecclesiastical. In 1204 the General Chapter of the order of Premonstratensians in Prémontré confirmed the abbey's rights.

Due to the arm-relic of the apostle Simon, which was donated to the Abbey Sayn in 1206 by the Archbishop of Cologne Bruno von Sayn, the church in Sayn today attracts pilgrims from all over the world.

The extraordinary outdoor frescos on the North wall of the church, as well as the recently restored colorful cloister with its Romanesque fountain house, are of particular interest to the visitors of today.
